Southern Officials Unite For Gun Rights

January 17, 2013 by Cole Cleburne

In the wake of the recent moves by the central government in Washington, Southern elected officials have release statements all supporting the rights of citizens to own firearms. In general each of these statements have said that any move by the federal government to limit gun rights will not be enforced in their jurisdiction.

On Wednesday Texas Governor Rick Perry saying:

“The Vice President’s committee was appointed in response to the tragedy at Newtown, but very few of his recommendations have anything to do with what happened there.

“Guns require a finger to pull the trigger. The sad young man who did that in Newtown was clearly haunted by demons and no gun law could have saved the children in Sandy Hook Elementary from his terror.

“There is evil prowling in the world – it shows up in our movies, video games and online fascinations, and finds its way into vulnerable hearts and minds. As a free people, let us choose what kind of people we will be. Laws, the only redoubt of secularism, will not suffice. Let us all return to our places of worship and pray for help. Above all, let us pray for our children.

“In fact, the piling on by the political left, and their cohorts in the media, to use the massacre of little children to advance a pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children, disgusts me, personally. The second amendment to the Constitution is a basic right of free people and cannot be nor will it be abridged by the executive power of this or any other president.”

, the Sheriff of Madison County (AL) has said,

““The federal authorities can try to enforce it. I’m the Sheriff of Madison County. I took a constitutional oath to defend the Constitution of the United States of America, to defend the Constitution of the State of Alabama, even if it takes my life. That is my position.”

….. “As long as you are a law-abiding citizen, then I don’t see a problem with law-abiding citizens being able to arm themselves however they so choose.”

….”Our people in our communities and homes need not fear that the Sheriff of Madison County or his deputies would come to their homes and make an attempt to disarm them. It will not happen under my watch.”

Sheriffs in Kentucky and Texas, as well as a few states outside the south have made similar statements.

Along with this state representative Chris Brown (R) has stated he will draft legislation that states that guns manufactured in Mississippi fall under state law not federal law.

“When it’s for self protection, you need as much firepower as needed to protect your family,” Bryant said.

Is this where southerners unite and draw the line?
